The structural system for the Training centre needs to be something which allows for varying space sizes that fits within the programme. The training centre programme caters for small personal spaces through to larger open span spaces. Therefore, a steel framed structure would best enhance this. Allowing different sized spaces to be easily created.

STEEL FRAME + PROGRAMME

STEEL FRAME

BRICKWORK

By having the steel frame as the primary structure it allows the facade to become free of structural loads. Therefore, the facade can become explorative. Using brick through is design is something I want to engage in. Using brick as a facade material will open it up to begin experimenting and creating forms.

SIMPLICITY OF BRICK AND STEEL

MICRO / Materiality choices and structure

The brick and steel frame combination can be seen in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre by O'Donnell and Tuomey. By analysing how they approach the strategy of their brickwork in relationship to the steel I can now begin to understand how this could be a good material for the training centre. Playing with daylighting through the use of brick would enhance the quality of the interior spaces especially in creating privacy around the building

LOOKING AT PRECEDENT

Designing the training centre with a structural system that allows the building to be of landmark scale. In relationship to nearby Hulme bridge the training centre will stand taller than the retail space.

MESO / Scale

MESO / Scale

The retail units will adopt a structural system that is of domestic scale in relation to the residential space around the site. Using brick is a common domestic building method and can be adapted easily to be used in retail.
