THE COMPLEXITIES OF HOMELESSNESS

THE CYCLE OF HOMELESSNESS

The cycle of homelessness is evident in a vast majority of those who become homeless. The journey from the streets, into a hostel and then being placed into their own homes seems like an obvious transistion. However, the issue comes in remaining in the homes and not getting back onto the streets. Remaining in homes can become considerably hard due to income and habits, addictions and cultures picked up on the streets which are hard to seperate from. A key in resolving homelessness is how we address this issue to supporting those in rebuilding their lives longterm when moved into homes.

LONG TERM ISSUES, SHORT TERM FIXES

1. Personal
2. Social
3. Financial

Homelessness is a long term issue, however we have begun try and fix the issue with short term fixes such as hostels, foodbanks, and short term housing. Although all are significant in restoring the lives of the homeless they are not stragetically moving towards resolve. There is a false assumption attached to the homeless that they need something different to those who have a roof over their head. In reality we all are in need of three key foundations:

The circumstances which arise between having a home or not can range from a complexity of areas. However, the gap between having a home and not is an area which can easily reduce in size if one of the above three key foundations are taken away.

CIRCUMSTANCES

"Everyone has a different story"

In the pursuit of resolving homelessness we must stop to acknowledge the reason for such complexity is the personal nature in which this issue embodies. Everyone has a different story, there is no one cause of homelessness. However, by addressing key issues and evident patterns of falling into homelessness we can begin to find ways which will bring the most success in addressing the issue.

There are many different causes of homelessness, however there are reoccuring contributors to causing homelessness. These are shown above, with the key factors I have personally identified through my research shown in larger circles. Each of the issues have cross overs, with each factor related to the other in some way. For example, family breakdown could be caused by unemployment, low income or drug and alcohol abuse.
