STRUCTURE + CONSTRUCTION STRATEGY

1. Simple Construction Methods
2. Minimum noise and traffic disruption on site due to residental area
3. Cost effective methods of construction
4. Structural systems which are aesthetically pleasing
5. Construction which can be achieved by local sources and not needing to source specialised workforce

In beginning to explore the structural stragtegy of Leaf St I first layed out key values and strageties which related to the concept of my design and the nature of the build. These help to develop a framework for choosing which construction methods to choose and how to creatively work within the boundaries and restrictions that these values lay out:

THE WORKFORCE

Sourcing the workforce in a sustainable manner, encouraging the local economy and the local workforce to be fed by this project. As this project aims to train those who are homeless and unemployed aiming to get them back into work these values need to be sustained through selecting the workforce. The diagram above shows how the workforce could be sourced from around Hulme. Through research I have found three skills which could be used on site these are; plasterers, joiners and plumbers. Sourcing these skills locally would contribute to:

Ownership
Encourages local economy
Expressing the values of the project through training

However, construction workforce and construction equipment cannot be sourced from solely from Hulme. Therefore, sourcing from outside of the ward must also be considered within the framework layed out. With specialist construction methods such as the CLT, the prefabrication process would have to take place in specialist environments. The aim is to source workforce from around Manchester aswell as contractors from within the area.

Sourcing locally, Contributing to the economy
