DRAWING CONCLUSIONS: THE BIG DRAW
DEVELOPING DESIGN
SITE STRATEGY: THE BIG DRAW
After the completion of the big draw event, the analysis of each iteration allow me to focus on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of each arrangement. From this analysis I began to draw conclusions on what would be successful on site and began to marry these observations with basic site analysis of Leaf St. I accumalated this analysis into one drawing to gain an overall understanding of the strategy in approaching design.
THE BREAKDOWN OF PROGRAMME
The mass modelling allowed for the overall form and main programme organisation before beginning to breakdown the detailed programme. The three main programme areas are the homeless shelter, training centre and shop units all of which adopt a different and detailed programme.
MASS MODELLING EXPERIMENTATION
After drawing conclusions from the big draw event, the next logical step in the design process was to begin developing a 3D understanding of the site and programme. This began the mass modelling experimentation. To view the whole project click on the photographs above or link below.
CAPSILO HOMELESS SERVICES CENTRE
ANALYSING PLANS OF EXISTING BUILDINGS
The CAPSILO homeless services centre is a recently designed centre in San Obispo, California. The shelter is designed with security at the forefront of programmatic organisation. The order of spaces in degree of public to private becomes evident in the hierarchy of spaces. Depicting the plans into firstly the programme they saw fit to put within the shelter aswell as analysing the layout of these programmes in relationship to other spaces.
DEAKIN TRADING CENTRE
ANALYSING PLANS OF EXISTING BUILDINGS
The Deaking Training Centre by Y2 architects is a space where trades are celebrated. The aim of the scheme is to improve student retention and outcomes through an engaging learning environment. The use of creative architectural form, light and gathering spaces are key elements to the success of the building. Once again depicitng the plans gained understanding for the needs of a training centre, ranging from the key spaces to the ones less obvious yet still critical to the success of a centre.
SHOP UNIT LAYOUT
DEVELOPING PLAN
Access points vertically and horizontally.
Arranging the training centre to sit within the footprint of the public baths.
Experimenting with lining up different aspects of context.
Mirroring and shifting the training centre layout to fit the homeless shelter buildings.
Creating positive access points around the site.
Final schematic. Lining certain elements of buildings up with the context, whilst the training centre remains anchored in the footprint of the public baths.
Placing the 2500 x 2500 grid over the site allowed the further development of plans in a modular form. Realising the public baths historic footprint as an anchor point for the training centre became a positive starting point from which to develop. Below shows the plan development from the realisation of these mentioned starting points all the way through to a final proposed plan.
In concluding the big draw event I realised five seperate programmatic iterations. Although very basic, the diagrams highlighted the main spaces needed within the site. Identifying the main programme and its potential iteration on site lead the design process through to developing schematic plans.
THE HOMELESS SHELTER
THE TRAINING CENTRE
The shop units will follow a modular system so there is the opportunity to change the sizings of spaces easily. These units adopt a 5000 x 5000 floorplan. In order to arrange the units on site I laid a 2500 x 2500 grid over the site. This allowed for units to be drawn out easily in relation to site strategy and form. The 2500 x 2500 allowed for shifts where needed, and avoided the overly blocked form of the 5000 x 5000.
